Portugal today is a country acknowledged for its touristic merits, which combine very different market segments. The best beaches, the best golf courses, the biggest wave, food, wine, cultural heritage, the light in Lisbon, the beauty of Sintra or the steep vineyards of Douro are some of the reasons that make the most prestigious newspapers and magazines in the world to name Portugal among places to visit. The World Travel Awards, one of the most important awards in word tourism, distinguished Portugal with several awards, including best World Golf Destination, best Boutique Resort (Hotel Vila Joya, in Albufeira), best Design Hotel (The Vine Hotel, in Funchal), best European Beach Destination (Algarve), best City Break (Lisbon).
As far as gastronomy, after the enshrinement of the Mediterranean Diet as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, Portugal has 12 restaurants with Michelin stars (4 of which in the Algarve). The numbers of tourist occupancy also mirror the increase in the number of visitors and revenue since 2013. From January to June 2014 alone, revenue grew 10.41%, generating more than €4 thousand million.
